Members and Associates,
Here are three things you need to know this week:
1) Regulatory – Responses for the S.C. Department of Insurance’s (DOI) liquor liability insurance data call must be submitted by August 31st. The data call resembles similar ones that have been issued in previous years. Please visit the following link for more information: 2026 SC Liability Data Call Notice- Final.pdf.
2) Media – In response to The Wall Street Journal’s recently published an article, “If You Get in a Car Crash, the Risk Is Growing Your Insurance Won’t Pay,” APCIA’s David Sampson penned a letter to the editor that ran earlier this week. The letter provides examples of legitimate reasons claims may be closed without payment and stated, “The claims for which the Journal identified an upward trend are auto liability and medical claims that are closed without payment. These claims are a magnet for billboard lawyers and fraudsters seeking to profit off the system.” The letter to the editor can be accessed at the following link: Meritless Claims Will Raise Everyone’s Rates – WSJ.
3) Hurricanes/Tropical Storms – As the Atlantic Hurricane season nears its historical peak, this year has been one of the quietest to-date in terms of accumulated cyclone energy. With three named storms through this point, AccuWeather recently adjusted their seasonal forecast, predicting fewer storms (8-11). More information can be found at the following link: It’s hurricane season. So where are the Atlantic hurricanes?.
