S.C. Insurance Association: 3 things you need to know this week

Members and Associates,
Here are three things you need to know this week:

1) Political – The S.C. House Republican Caucus recently elected Micah Caskey as the new Majority Leader. Caskey succeeds Rep. Davey Hiott, who is moving into a new role focused on supporting House Republican members and their campaigns statewide ahead of November’s general elections.

2) Legislative – Gov. Henry McMaster signed the $350 million supplemental appropriations bill that was recently passed by state legislators. The agreement also calls for changes to the earmark process in future budget cycles, including introducing House projects earlier in the process, bringing House and Senate spending levels closer together, and ending direct earmarks to nonprofits. With the bill signed, and no vetoes, it is likely the end of the extraordinary legislative session. More can be read at the following link: Gov. McMaster signs $350 million earmarks bill, funding projects across SC.

3) Industry – The American Property Casualty Insurance Association (APCIA) recently published an actuarial report showing that in 2025, Florida policyholders paid about $3B less in premium than they did in 2024. The report concludes that legislative changes that reduced claims litigation and defense costs led to the decreases.
