S.C. Insurance Association: 3 things you need to know this week

Members and Associates,
Here are three things you need to know this week:

1) Political – The filing deadline for South Carolina judicial candidates was earlier this week. Five candidates have applied for the state’s Supreme Court vacancy: Ralph “Tripp” Anderson, John Geathers, Blake Hewitt, Eugene “Bubba” Griffith, Jr., and Maite Murphy. The Judicial Merit Selection Commission will begin screening candidates in November. More information is available at the following link: Five candidates file to run for SC Supreme Court seat.

In other political news, interim U.S. Senator Darline Graham won a runoff this week against Congressman Ralph Norman with more than 52% of the vote. Graham will face Democrat Annie Andrews in the general election in November. More information can be read at the following link: Darline Graham wins GOP nomination for next US Senate term following her brother’s death • SC Daily Gazette.

2) Legislative –  Lawmakers returned to the Statehouse this week to approve about $350 million in supplemental appropriations. The bill heads to  Gov. Henry McMaster, where it is subject to potential line-item vetoes. The agreement also calls for changes to the earmark process in future budget cycles, including introducing House projects earlier in the process, bringing House and Senate spending levels closer together, and ending direct earmarks to nonprofits. Under the new framework, nonprofit projects would instead need to be sponsored by a local government. More can be read at the flowing link: SC budget chairmen agree on $350 million for earmarks | The State.

3) Hurricanes/Tropical Storms – Tropical Storm Dolly has formed in the Atlantic as the season nears its historical peak (September 10th). More information can be found at the following link: Current Storm Information | Tropical Tidbits.
