S.C. Insurance Association: 3 things you need to know this week

Members and Associates,
Here are three things you need to know this week:

1) Legal – As a reminder, the South Carolina Supreme Court is requesting public comment on Rule 5.4 of the Rules of Professional Conduct and whether revisions should be made to sufficiently address private equity investment in the practice of law. The deadline is September 29th. Details can be found at the following link: Request for Written Comments – South Carolina Judicial Branch.

2) Auto Insurance – According to a study by 4Pointsback, South Carolina has one of the highest rates for traffic fatalities in the country. South Carolina ranked 3rd, with 1.67 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles. However, the fatality rate fell 9% in 2024. More information can be read at the following link: South Carolina Driving Statistics 2026: The Complete, Alarming Data Hub.

3) Hurricanes/Tropical Storms – This week marked the 37th anniversary of Hurricane Hugo’s landfall in South Carolina. The storm caused an estimated $6 billion in damage (a record at the time), destroyed 56,000 homes, and 29 of the state’s 46 counties were declared disaster areas. More can be read at the following link: Look back at Hurricane Hugo, which hit SC 37 years ago.
