Members and Associates,
Here are three things you need to know this week:
1) Legal – Several members and partner organizations signed onto a letter supporting amendments to Rule 5.4 of the Rules of Professional Conduct, to expressly prohibit third-party investments in law firms. A copy of the letter can be accessed at the link embedded at the bottom of this email. A copy of the Supreme Court’s request for public comment can be found at the following link: Request for Written Comments – South Carolina Judicial Branch.
2) Political – With the general election just over one month away, South Carolina gubernatorial candidates Jermaine Johnson (D) and Alan Wilson (R) are scheduled to participate in a debate next week. The debate is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 6, beginning at 7:00 p.m. and will be televised by Gray Media. More information can be read at the following link: 2026 SC governor debate: Who’s participating, how to watch.
3) Hurricanes/Tropical Storms – The Charleston Post & Courier’s Rising Waters Lab published a series of hurricane-related articles this week. The multi-part series focused on how a major, category 5 hurricane would impact the Charleston area, and what the recovery process might look like. Each of the articles can be accessed at the following link: Rising Waters | Climate Stories of the South.
